Heart Diseases
Heart diseases is leading killer in the new horizon of developed world and developing world. Heart diseases rank only after cancers in the leading killer ranks. Obesity has a job to do in this ranking if share of obesity is sorted out in this killing it becomes major killer even obesity associated conditions kill more people than HIV infection whom case mortality ratio is 100%. Combining the effect of heart disease and obesity associated conditions it can win the killing race by defeating cancers. An exciting news about obesity is its ability to cause heart disease.
Coronary Heart Disease and Obesity
Coronary heart disease kills millions of people all over the world. Obesity has a lot to do for development of coronary heart disease. Obesity increases a number of things in the blood which are helpful in development of coronary heart disease. Theses include
- Insulin resistance
- Increase in blood cholesterol
- Increase in blood lipids
- Decrease in protective HDL’s in the blood
These all things work in a good healthy harmony to bring coronary heart disease leading to decreased blood supply to heart and eventually heart attack. In mild form and at early stages it can be in the form of angina but with advancing stages it can lead to heart attack which is often fatal. In a BMI range of 23 to 25 there is 52% increased risk of coronary heart disease in women. For men the BMI over 29 increases a 72% risk of getting coronary heart disease.
Congestive Heart Failure in Obesity
Obesity leads to left ventricular hypertrophy of heart. Left ventricular hypertrophy may be with or without hypertension. This increases the volume of left ventricle. At first there is also increase in the cardiac output but then gradually there is decrease in stroke volume and cardiac output due to dilatation of left heart. Post mortem findings in the obese persons show that there are cardiomyopathies also present. Due to dilatation of left heart irregular heart beating may ensue and cause sudden death. These types of deaths are also called premature deaths.
The obesity not only affects left heart it also causes right ventricular hypertrophy. The right heart hypertrophy occurs due to the hypoventilation as a result of Obstructive sleep apnea. OSA causes the pulmonary congestion which causes the right ventricular hypertrophy. Obesity is also related to valvular heart dysfunction specially mitral and aortic valve dysfunction. All these conditions lead to sudden death of patient or congestive heart failure.
Central or abdominal obesity is more tightly related to the Heart diseases. Hypertension, coronary heart disease or sudden death all lethal outcomes of obesity if you want to have beautiful healthy heart keep yourself away from obesity and keep an eye on your weight.
