Electrical muscle stimulators are experiencing a new age of advancements as now their special breed is in experience as implanted gastric stimulators. Implanted gastric stimulators are in experimental use as new devices to treat obesity. The pioneer in this field is Dr.Scott Shikora professor of Surgery at Tuft school of Medicine in England. He is head of bariatric surgery department and with his team performed this experiment on 30 patients. They implanted them with gastric stimulators and observed for one year. Most of them lost weight even some of them lost weight upto 18% of their excessive weight.

This stomach stimulator is a small device which is placed in the abdominal wall under the skin of patient after a small operation. It has size of a small coin and easy to manipulate. Two wires from this coin like device are attached to the stomach. This operation is complete now. This is a small operation and takes round about an hour. After installing the device in its place patient is given dose of stimulation until patient feels it and its presence is revealed upon the patient. At this time the power of device is lowered down to minimum levels. And now it is ready to work for the patient. The doctors describe that patients do not feel any buzzing pain but they have depressed appetite.

The device is being manufactured on commercial basis in the Europe and is being marketed. It is also being implanted in the patients who come for gastric reduction surgery. What will be the outcomes in the near future this question has yet to be answered by the medical science personals. The side effects of this device on the body are not predictable right now. It will take time to perfect it or bane it. Also it has to go a long to get approval from FDA.
