It is usually used in patients with BMI of 40 or above. It is placed in the body around the stomach after surgery and it bands around the stomach to create small pouch to hold small amounts of food. A fluid is used to inflate and deflate the hollow silicon band by injecting the fluid in the access port of the device. The access port is placed under the skin in the chest of the patient.

Effectivity

Different studies have indicated it as a quite effective device in weight loss therapy especially in severely obese patients. On average a patient using Lap-band lost 36% of excess weight of the ideal body weight. In some patients it reduced 75% of unwanted weight but in some cases there was no weight loss at all. So overall effectivity of this device is reasonably good and it should be used to treat severe obesity.

Side-effects

Abdominal infection, slipping of band, nausea and vomiting are its some of the unwanted effects. Even some patients may report a constant abdominal pain and may require hospitalization or reopening of abdomen.
